Thanksgiving in Sweetwater

Trey and I drove up to Sweetwater for Thanksgiving dinner with the Haun family. Unfortunately, Heidi’s work schedule prevented her from going, but I made sure I ate her portion of gravy.

We were joined by my parents and brother Philip and my great uncle & aunt Charles & Beverly Bales. As usual, Grammaw prepared a huge feast and Beverly brought her own share of delicious items. Trey enjoyed his time with this grandparents & great-grandparents and showed of his letter reading skills to everyone.

For a stroll down memory lane, here are photos from Trey’s first Thanksgiving in 2006.

Why No Updates

Daddy is off in the Dominican Republic with his pal Mike Lowery. They are working at an orphanage in La Romana. Be back soon!

George L. Smith Panorama

While visiting the George L. Smith State Park I made this panoramic photo. It is comprised of about 15 different images that were stitched together.

George L. Smith State Park

We planned this park visit to coincide with their 8th annual cane grinding. Sugar cane is brought in, ground, pressed, boiled, and filtered into cane syrup right before your eyes. After watching the process we had a picnic and then hiked across the lake and into the woods. The lake is gorgeous with it’s trees sticking up out of the water.

The 2.5 mile hike was a bit of a disappointment as we expected the “tortoise habitat” to be the reptiles in captivity. Turns out it is just a section of the woods where gopher tortoises roam wild. With the cool weather, the tortoises were all in their burrows keeping warm and out of sight. Guess we will just have to go back in the Spring!

Monkey Time with Mommy

With Heidi on night float she gets Fridays off so we headed down to Warner-Robins to visit Monkey Joe’s again. This was Heidi’s first time there and Trey enjoyed the play time with her on the giant inflatables.

Is Trey a Locavore?

First off what is a locavore? I had no idea the word existed until I saw it discussed on the news today. A locavore is “a person who attempt to eat only foods grown locally.”* The word was just coined 3 years ago, but made it into dictionaries last year and was even declared the Oxford America Dictionary’s 2007 Word of the Year. Most locavores define “locally” as within 100 miles.

The Hauns are no where near becoming locavores. It would be too tough of a challenge for us to pull off. However, we do buy most of our vegetables & fruit from our local Farmer’s Market and highly recommend it. [insert Stuff White People Like joke here]

Trey and I hit the Macon State Farmer’s Market weekly and have befriended the couple that owns and runs Branner Produce. Royce and Juana Branner are great to always have suggestions on how to cook different vegetables and have introduced us to a couple new ones. Trey is quite fond of Juana too - probably because she is always slipping him a free plum or apple. Continue reading ‘Is Trey a Locavore?’
