Did you realize Richard B. Russell was from Winder? His house is still there on the highway to Athens just after you leave the city. He never married, but considered his nephews and nieces as his children. I taught with one of them - Susan Russell Reynolds - at WBHS (she was the librarian when you were there as a high school freshman). Russell said that his greatest achievement as a Senator authoring and getting passed the federal school lunch program that set standards for school lunches and made provision for poor children to have free or greatly reduced school lunches.
