Fall Festival

We didn’t get or make Trey a costume this year for Halloween. We aren’t opposed to costumes or even Halloween, we’ve just been too busy and hadn’t thought about it.

Like many churches, Tabernacle Baptist was having a Fall Festival with games and candy as an alternative to trick-or-treating (those I think most kids did both). We took Trey there and he had a blast!

There were all sorts of “booths” setup with games and each one was really simple with one goal – make it easy for the kid to win candy. The great thing was that Trey wasn’t all that interested in the candy… he just loved the games.

Trey Meets the Muppets

Today Trey and I headed up to north Atlanta to meet up with our friend Jym Davis and visit the Atlanta History Center. The Center has a traveling Smithsonian exhibit of Jim Henson’s Fantastic World. With Trey (and my) love of the Muppets and Sesame Street I figured it was something he would get a kick out of.

Trey really enjoyed the exhibit for all the displays with original puppets. He got to see Kermit the Frog, Rowlf the Dog, Bert & Ernie, and most importantly – the Mahna Mahn trio. There was a great kids section with puppets for the children to play with – Trey wouldn’t put the Ernie one down.

We checked out some of the Center’s other exhibits and walked through their gardens. I was surprised at how good their exhibit for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta was (in fact, the exhibit may be better than those Olympics were). Our little athlete ran up and down the track and then stood on the gold medal podium.

Panola Mountain State Park

The odd thing about Panola Mnt. State Park is that you can’t see Panola Mountain. The park is actually a “conservation park” and the mountain is in the restricted conservation area.  That was a bit disappointing for me, but Trey wasn’t disappointed at all because the park had a nice, big playground. Another odd thing about the park is that it is near the Atlanta airport so planes fly over every 30 seconds – really takes away from the secluded-in-nature feeling.

After playing on the playground we visited the nature center to thaw out (it was really cold and windy). Trey enjoyed the displays of butterflies, the dioramas of local wildlife, and an indoor bee hive. After we warmed up, we hiked a 3/4 mile trail to the only granite outcrop that isn’t in the restricted area. Click the image to the right for a panorama I made of the outcrop.

Pumpkin Carving

The church we’ve been attending lately had a Sunday School get-together last night. The gathering revolved around everyone bringing a pumpkin to carve. Trey and I hit the store this morning and after a grueling selection process, Trey finally found one that was “OK.”

This evening we headed over to Adam and Amanda Crosby’s house to hang out with our new friends from church. Trey had a wonderful time playing with all the kids, though he wasn’t too interested in carving the pumpkin. He did sit down for 30 seconds to draw the face on the pumpkin which I used as a model when I carved it out.

A big thank you to the Crosbys for inviting us! They have a blog of their own over at http://www.easysite.com/Crosby You’ll see that their son is just a few months younger than Trey and has his same build and blond hair. At church folks keep mistaking ours for theirs.

26th Annual Chitlin Festival

About a month ago, we drove down to the little town of Yatesville just to look around and snap some pictures. While talking to some locals I found about THE event of the year: the Chitlin Hoedown. I had to have explained to me what exactly a “chitlin” was. Though the idea of fried pig intestines wasn’t the most appetizing, I still marked October 25th down on my calendar. We returned to Yatesville today for the festivities and had a blast. There was a parade, a marching band, and of course… lots and lots of chitlins.

Below is the link to my photos from the day. I’ve also posted some black & white photos of the marching band in a separate photo gallery.

Potters Drop By

Missionaries to Guyana, Joe & Teri Potter stopped by today to visit us on their way to Florida. They’ve got grandchildren around Trey’s age and Trey really enjoyed having them hang around for the evening. In fact, he stayed up pretty late playing trains, coloring, and watching the World Series with them.
