Uncle Skenny Comes to Town

My brother Kenny and my cousin Brett Weber arrived today after a long 48 hour drive from San Diego. Tomorrow they head to the Davis’ with William and Trey for a weekend of camping in the Smokies. Here are some photos from our late afternoon visit to the lake together.

The Rewards of Getting Lost

thomson-trails-01.jpg

Today Trey and I planned on visiting Arrowhead Park but found it to still be closed after the tornadoes last May. So instead I headed 15 miles south to the L.H.Thomson factory. Why visit a bike parts factory? This great company not only makes seat posts and handlebar stems for the world’s top bicycle manufacturers but they’ve created a bunch of trails on their property that they let the public use. Working Mommy

Beginning residency and working full time (actually double-full time) has been somewhat difficult for me from the standpoint of being a mom. There is always that lurking fear, that I am sure many working mothers feel, that I am not going to be as good of a mom as I want to be.  Having an amazing husband like William who is able to stay home with Trey and take him out to explore really helps ease the transition. Dauset Trails Nature Center

Heidi has the weekend off so we headed 30 miles north to Dauset Trails Nature Center. I found out about this place from a mountain bike trails website I’ve been using to find hiking places. This Nature Center is better than any of the state parks we’ve visited.Despite being privately owned it is very well maintained and it’s FREE!

They have some great hiking trails and a mini-zoo with beavers, otters, bears, bison, bald eagles, owls, foxes, bobcats, and more. Trey had a great time and we enjoyed the fresh air. It was overcast and kept things a bit cooler than it has been.

I’m posting photos of Trey below but you can see our photos of the park’s animals and natural beauty here.

The Prayer Garden

Today we walked down the road to a Methodist church that had a playground. We were surprised to find that it also had a Prayer Garden – one unlike any I’ve ever seen before. It seems that they hit up the local lawn ornament shop to pick out their statues for the prayer stops. There was a conquistador, a piggy bank pig, a book-end lion, a couple very fluffy sheep, Neptune, Hansel & Gretel, and several Jesus statues that had undergone heart transplants (those photos here). After kissing all the animals (and riding some) we headed over to the playground for some normal fun.

The New Nap Routine

It is fascinating to look back at the many “phases” Trey goes through with different things. Often it is frustrating when we are in the middle of a new phase but weeks (or even days) later we can look back and laugh. A current phase he is going through involves books.

Curious George and the Bunny used to be his favorite book. Then Go Dog Go was the only book he’d read. Now Trey likes not just any book, but ALL books. I used to read him a book or two and tell him to go to sleep at naptime. He would whine a little but doze off pretty quick. Now when I leave the room he pulls each of his books out of his basket and flips through EVERY one. Sometimes it takes him upwards of an hour. I’ll finally peek in to find him asleep in a bed filled with books.

The plus-side of this fascination with books is that what used to be a 2-hour nap now turns into 3 hours and gives me more time to work. We’ll see how long this phase lasts…
