Zapata Falls in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains

Trey has been to Zapata Falls before but two things were very different then. First, it was April and the creek and falls were completely frozen. Second, Trey was just 21 weeks old, about 10 inches long, and still in his mother’s belly.

This year we hiked up to the falls a month later in the year so they weren’t quite as frozen. I walked up the stream into the cave to see the partially frozen falls and Heidi and Trey played along the creek’s banks. Trey really enjoyed throwing stones into the chilly water and watching the splashes. After I came out of the cave we hung around quite some time throwing stone after stone after stone. I didn’t think he would ever tire of that.
