Trey’s White Water Rapids Adventure

I confess, my title has been sensationalized a bit. The water at the river does run rapidly over rocks, but it is only white because of the soap used by the women washing their clothes in it.

Trey’s visit to the river was still exciting though. Probably more for the women and children there than for Trey. He attracted quite a crowd as he splashed in the water and slid on the rocks.

We’ve put together a little slideshow of his adventure.

Heidi Carries Trey African-Style

We went on a hike the other day and Heidi put Trey on her back.  She’s been doing it more and more and this was the longest period of time she’s carried him that way.  He is apparently getting quite comfortable doing it and dozed off for half of the hike.

Trey goes to Nalerigu’s Presbyterian Church

Baby (Ellen) holds Trey outside the children’s churchLast week we went to Nalerigu First Baptist for church but this week we decided to attend the Presbyterian Church known as “Presby.” Baby and her family attend that church so we thought it would be nice to see some familiar faces.

Trey is really into holding hands now and the other kids never seem to mind.Trey sure was excited to see Baby when she came in! He immediately reached for her and she took him to the children’s church for the rest of the service.

He has also bonded with Baby’s two little girls, Bernice (Bernie) and Katherine (Kate, seen in photo holding his hand).

Happy Child Learning Center

Trey visited the Happy Child Learning Center in town. It is a private school for children from 3 to 12. We had hoped he would get to play on the playground, but the mob of children would have either trampled him or torn him apart (or both). He still had a fun time staring back at all the smiling faces in yellow.

The Best Nanny Ever

Heidi, Trey, and “Baby” (Ellen)You know you’ve hired the best nanny ever when everyone in town calls her by her nickname “Baby”. Her actual name is Ellen but for as long as she can remember she has just been called Baby. In order to make things less confusing on this blog about our baby, I’ll refer to her as Ellen.

Ellen’s husband leaves the hospital for a lunch breakEllen has worked for many years at the hospital taking care of other missionaries’ young children and working as a house cleaner. Her husband is a nurse at the hospital and she has two children of her own.

I was a bit worried about Trey warming up to her but he let her carry him most of the morning and she got him to nap pretty quickly.  We walked into town to the market to buy some toys for Trey.  All they had was some rubber balls.  I bought two for a grand total of about $1.40.

Trey attends Nalerigu Baptist Church

Trey plays with the kids at churchTrey had a great time a church today. He clapped and danced up the aisle with everyone as they went up to give their offerings. When he got a little antsy during the 2 1/2 hour service Heidi took him outside and he played with the other kids. A few of them were really obsessed with him and would cry when their parents pulled them away from him.
