Trey and I had to drop Heidi off at the airport in Tampa early this morning so we decided to go on an adventure afterwards. Our good friend James Thomas works at Tampa’s Florida Aquarium and invited us over for a tour. Trey was pretty tired (due for his morning nap) but he still enjoyed the glowing tanks full of fishies. Here are some of our photos from the excursion.

Eric Carle is a well-known children’s book artist. You’ve probably seen his “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” or “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?.” Trey really loves the Eric Carle books that we have and we read them to him daily.
NPR recently did a great story on Eric Carle. He tells of how he grew up in Nazi Germany as a child and that dark time made him want to use color as much as possible in all his art. You can listen to it and see an audio slideshow about his work at NPR.org.
This morning I was going through the usual routine with Trey; feeding him his breakfast while listening to NPR on the radio. He was having a great time eating his Gerber Organic Oatmeal Cereal when they announced on the radio that “Gerber is recalling some of its baby food.”
I paused with the next spoonful in front of his mouth.
“The company is pulling its organic rice and oatmeal cereals…” My heart stopped. Trey leaned in trying to get the spoonful of recalled cereal in his mouth.
It is moments like these that really show how amazingly complex our brains are. In that split second a million thoughts went through my head – things like “where’s the phone, I’ll need to call poison control”, “will Heidi be in the OR or will I be able to get a hold of her”, “I’ll need to get him out of this chair if I need to induce vomiting”, “will the neighbor be able to get us to a hospital or should I call an ambulance”, and on and on…
My moment of paranoia was interrupted by the rest of NPR’s sentence “…because some of the packages contain lumps that will not dissolve in milk and are a potential choking hazard.”
WHAT A RELIEF! I felt much better since I always mix it up well and mash the mix into a good puree. Just to be sure I triple-checked the cereal I was feeding him and then we finished our daily morning routine – just a little more carefully than usual. We had our Sunday School class over last night for a cookout and prayer time for next week’s upcoming VBS. Since our class is mostly young married couples there were quite a few kids around. As you can see in the photo below, Trey was trying hard to be the center of attention.

This morning when Trey woke up I heard him gagging and noticed something was in his mouth. I quickly stuck my finger in his mouth and pulled out a small black plastic screw. I looked around his crib and could not figure out what the screw had come from. This evening Heidi mentioned that maybe it was from his stuffed animals in his crib. I was a bit doubtful but sure enough, upon closer inspection one of them was missing an eye. I plucked the other eye out of the small stuffed animal sheep to prevent the incident from happening again. He’ll have to make do with a blind sheep for now.
Now before I rant about how this “Made in China” toy is a serious health hazard I must admit that they have me on a technicality. The tag does read “5 years and up”. Nonetheless, who’s bright idea was it to use hard plastic screws as eyeballs? Who knows what kind of damage those sharp points could have done to his windpipe or intestines had he swallowed them! Parents BEWARE!
