III + III = Fun

Payton and Amy, our world-famous friends from Colorado, had their first child a little over 3 months ago. Payton like me is the 2nd in his family to hold his name. And he, like me, insisted on naming his son “the third.” So today, Payton Douglas Torrence III payed Roger William Haun III a visit.

Payton Junior Junior (as we like to call him) and Trey had a jolly good time discussing French New Wave cinema, the meaning of life, and studying the mobile over Trey’s crib. They seemed to enjoy the latter the most.

I, II, and III

Today I went back to work fulltime after my six weeks of paternity leave. Heidi gave me this great “back to work” present to put up in my office. Three generations of Roger William Hauns. What a collection!

Laboring the Haun-ly Way: Final Thoughts

Now that I am nearly 6 weeks out from delivering Trey, I wanted to record my final thougths about labor and delivery.

In my account of childbirth, I described the pain in the best way I could, but truthfully, the pain was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It was entirely manageable. As I was reading the other day, I came across the following verse. “A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.” -John 16:21. The pain is temporary! For me, the extrinsic sources of pain were the worst: tugging and twisting of hospital monitors, the placement of the IV, the burning of the penicillin in my vein, and the stinging of the needles during repairs. I was able to deal very well with the pain that originated within my body through deep breathing and relaxation.

She’s Trying to Make Me Crazy Too!

Earthquake!Last night, I woke up and felt the bed shaking gently back and forth. I looked over at Heidi and she was sitting up in bed. “Heidi, is the bed shaking?” I asked. “No” she answered as the shaking stopped. I turned over to go back to sleep but felt it begin to shake again. I sat up and said “No, it’s shaking again! I think it’s an earthquake!”

I know you think I am completely insane – an earthquake in Florida? Well, it just so happens that the day before there actually was an earthquake in Florida.

The shaking stopped again and I repeated my assumption “I think that was another earthquake!”
“No,” Heidi answered, “It’s me. I’m rocking Trey to sleep.”
I squinted and looked closely at Heidi. She wasn’t holding Trey – it was that “invisible baby” again. By now I’ve learned though…

Just roll over and go back to sleep.

I expected sleep deprivation…but this?

As I prepared myself for motherhood, I knew that sleep deprivation would be part of the picture. What I didn’t expect was insanity.
